The Hunger Games - One Trini girl's review

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss in "The Hunger Games"
I did not really know about "The Hunger Games" series before all the talk about the movie. Sad, but true. I did not have any real interest in the movie either, but between all the hype and my boredom, I went to see the movie today, ahead of the crazy, "never see come see" rush.

I enjoyed the movie. Though I was at first put off by the many comparisons to the ever annoying Twilight saga, I went with an open mind. Having tried once to actually watch Twilight - the very first one - and after failing miserably, I can honestly say, this was nothing like that. Nothing. The story was good, the acting was miles ahead and it was more than mildly entertaining. In short, I enjoyed it. Loved the Katniss and Haymitch characters - both well acted by Jennifer Lawrence and Woody Harrelson respectively. Not to mention, Stanley Tucci's larger than life, Caesar. And the eye candy effect - Liam Hemsworth as Gale. Even the men "awwwed" for him when Katniss did the whole "star crossed lovers" thing for the cameras and they showed poor heartbroken Gale. Awwww.

Will I go read the books now? Honestly I think I might. Though the movie did not go into great depth with regard to some of the obvious themes, I am sure I would enjoy how they are treated in the books - the gross divide between the rich citizens of the Capitol and the poor, starving people of the Districts being the obvious example, not to mention the exploitation.

Up next - Wrath of the Titans. Now that, I am excited to see! But have you seen The Hunger Games yet? Let me know what you think!!

Did you enjoy "The Hunger Games" movie?

  1. The Hunger Games has as much to say about oppressive politics and the bloodthirsty, heartless media as it does about the internal struggle among the combatants. Still though, everybody here is great, especially Lawrence in a star-making role, and definitely has me pumped up for the sequel. Good review. Check out my review when you can.

  2. I read all three books in two days. Fantastic stuff. The author touched on just about everything from confusion; poverty; misuse of political powers; slavery; human trafficking; you name it, it was in there!

I'm super stoked to see the movies-- which is very rare for me-- Your review just made me a little more excited!

  3. If you even slightly like the movie then you absolutely need to read the books! There is so much more in depth explanation of the different themes....I saw the movie today and I loved it as well, but the books always win out in my mind (Twilight too - give the books a chance!)...oh...and no mention of Lenny Kravitz as Cinna? That was a genius piece of casting in my book :)

  4. Lenny and the gold eyeliner? lol. I guess because I have not read the books yet, the Cinna character did not resonate as much. Lenny is just sexy...that is all. But he was good. Just not as good and memorable as Woody and Jennifer. I am going to get the books. I have only heard great things, but you could not pay me to buy Twilight, Adrienne. I have to draw the line there!! lol.

  5. I'm tempted to see the film, but everything I'm reading makes me think that I want to read the book(s) first. I like to make up my own vision of the characters before I have them thrust upon me!

  6. I read all three books awhile ago. I thought they did a great job with the movie! All the characters looked exactly like I pictured them. The books are definitely worth a read and are NOT AT ALL like Twilight.

  7. It's interesting reading the point of view of someone who hadn't already read the books. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. There was some backstory that didn't make it into the film and I wondered if it was confusing. Glad to know it wasn't!

  8. Eeeep--I cannot WAIT to see this movie. May check it out this week if I am able. I have only read the first book (which is a rarity, because most people breeze through all three books in a matter of days) but I absolutely loved it. The only reason I haven't read the others is because of required reading, but I'm glad to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't find it confusing at all (may see it with someone who hasn't seen the movie yet either). Thanks for the review, Trini!
